Frequently Asked Questions
Is a solar water pump worth the investment?
Absolutely. You get all the benefits of a high-functioning water pump without the need for plugging into electricity — or paying for it. These pumps work well with minimal maintenance and are long-lasting, too.
How do I know which water pump is right for my small water fountain feature?
A general rule of thumb is to choose a pump that can move 100 gallons of water per hour per inch of waterfall width. In other words, you should only need about 100 to 160 GPH for a small waterfall. We offer a solar water pump quiz to help you find the right pump for your project.
Does my fountain have to be deep for the solar pump to work?
No, the fountain does not have to be deep for the solar pump to work. While it can go as low as 20 to 30 feet, it only needs to be deep enough to thoroughly submerge the pump which generally is 4-5 inches. All Solariver™ pumps are dry-run protected to protect the pump from burnout in case the water is not deep enough.
Why does my birdbath need a solar water pump?
Aside from being aesthetically pleasing, the moving water draws the attention of the birds. If you want an active fountain, then make it noticeable. What’s more, the fountain helps to keep oxygen in the water so that birds have a healthy place to drink and bathe. And since it is solar-powered, you can still place it anywhere in your yard without worrying about access to electricity.
Is a submerged solar water pump harmful to birds?
No, Solariver’s solar-powered water pump kit for bird baths is non-toxic to birds and other wildlife.
How often should I clean my solar water pump?
Cleaning and maintaining your solar water pump is something you should do at least once or twice each year. If you notice that your pump has slowed down its function or it has stopped entirely, then it may be clogged. You will want to take it out and clean it. View the maintenance and troubleshooting instructional videos in our Help Center.
Can I adjust how high I want my fountain?
Solariver’s solar-powered water pump can create beautiful fountains —- even pushing water 4-6 feet in the air. Since not all water features need that much power or volume of water, some of our solar water pumps come with adjustable valve control so you can control the water flow.
Will my backyard water feature need direct sunlight for a solar pump kit?
Although solar water pumps are often able to work on cloudy days, they do require lots of direct sunlight throughout the day for optimal performance. Be sure to set up your solar panel in an area that receives direct sunlight and is free from obstructions like the shade or shadows of trees and buildings.
I plugged in my solar water pump but it does not work. What can I do?
Solariver’s water pumps must be submerged in water first, then you can plug it in. It will not work any other way. For further troubleshooting, chat with us or visit our help center.
Does a solar water pump require professional installation?
No, Solariver’s solar water pumps do not require professional installation. They are designed for easy setup. Follow a few easy steps and you will be up and running in no time— First, submerge the pump in water. Then, connect the pump to the solar panel, ensuring that the solar panel has full access to the sun. Finally, assemble the tubes and nozzle as needed. It’s that easy.
